SODOM HAD NO BIBLE
GENESIS 18:16-33; 2 PETER 2:4-7
Text:
II Peter 2:4-7
“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down
to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved
unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah
the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the
flood upon the world of the ungodly; And turning the cities of
Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an
overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should
live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy
conversation of the wicked:
Introduction:
We are living in what I feel are very dangerous days. We are much
like the church in Revelation 3.
Revelation 3:14-18
“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write;
These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the
beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou
art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then
because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue
thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and
increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not
that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and
naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that
thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be
clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and
anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.”
We have been living as if God does not exist, and that He doesn’t
see our sin.
The Prophet Isaiah warned the nation of Israel against living as the
world is living today.
Isaiah 22:8-13
“And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in
that day to the armour of the house of the forest. Ye have seen
also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye
gathered together the waters of the lower pool. And ye have
numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye
broken down to fortify the wall. Ye made also a ditch between
the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not
looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that
fashioned it long ago. And in that day did the Lord GOD of
hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to
girding with sackcloth: And behold joy and gladness, slaying
oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat
and drink; for to morrow we shall die.”
As we consider the events surrounding us today we must remember
that God is in control, and that He is no respecter of persons.
Acts 10:34-35
“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive
that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that
feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him.”
Note as we consider this though: “Sodom Had No Bible.”
1. THE TRUTH
A. A Nation Will Be Blessed Whose God Is the Lord
Psalm 33:12
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people
whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”
1. Not Building
2. Not Businesses
B. We Are To Glory in God, and Not Ourselves
Jeremiah 4:2
“And thou shalt swear, The LORD liveth, in truth, in judgment,
and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in
Him, and in Him shall they glory.”
C. Righteousness Exalts a Nation
Proverbs 14:34
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any
people.”
D. There Is a Price for Forgetting God
Psalm 9:17
“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that
forget God.”
2. THE TURN
We have turned from God. We have had many opportunities and
blessings that many have never enjoyed. In our text we find a
reference made to Sodom.
II Peter 2:6
“And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes
condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample
unto those that after should live ungodly;”
We must remember:
Sodom had no Churches – We have thousands
Sodom had no Bible – We have millions
Sodom had no Preachers – We have Thousands
Sodom had no Christian Schools – We have Hundreds
Sodom had no Prayer Meetings – We have Many
Sodom had no Christian Radio Stations – We Have
Thousands
Sodom had no Internet Access to Access the Gospel –
Today its Unlimited
Sodom had no History of God’s Judgment to Warn Them of Their
Dangerous Sin – We Have Volumes of Them
A. What obligation has a Holy God to a people who spend one hour
in church on Sunday, then walk in the counsel of the ungodly the
rest of the week?
B. What obligation has God to a people (America) who since 1970
have murdered more than 35,273,546 babies in abortion clinics and
hospitals?
C. What obligation has God to a people whose “religious coalition
for reproductive choice” stated in an ad “Abortion is a personal
decision best left in the hands of a woman and her God,”
“Pro-Faith, Pro-Family, Pro-Choice.”
D. What obligation has God to a people who place on its currency
“In God We Trust,” then ban and bar children from singing
Christmas carols and allowed just a few people cause a law
to be passed not allowing prayer or Gods Word in its schools?
E. What obligation has God to a people who have made sodomy
legal, and are considering allowing them to be able to adopt
children?
F. What obligation has God to a people whose President and Vice-
President put their endorsement on Sodomite marriages?
Leviticus 20:13
“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both
of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put
to death; their blood shall be upon them.”
G. What obligation has God to a people who consume millions of
gallons of what God calls a mocker and raging?
Proverbs 20:1
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
H. What obligation has God to a people who worship the creation
more that the creator?
Notice Joshua’s reminder to Israel:
Joshua 22:29
“God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn
this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt
offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of
the LORD our God that is before His tabernacle.”
America has turned her back on God and has thumbed
her nose to Him. She has said as did the Laodiceans,
we are rich and have need of nothing.
3. THE TUMULT
A. We are facing things that we have never faced before
1. Viruses with no cures
2. Children killing children in our schools
3. Terrorist running loose and destroying people and property.
4. THE TREATMENT
A. Humble Ourselves
II Chronicles 7:14
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their
sin, and will heal their land.”
B. Repent, Seek Forgiveness and His Face
Jeremiah 36:3
“It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I
purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his
evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
C. Turn to the Lord
Deuteronomy 30:9-10
“And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work
of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy
cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will
again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers:
If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to
keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this
book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all
thine heart, and with all thy soul.”
II Chronicles 30:6-9
“So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes
throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the
commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn
again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and He
will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand
of the kings of Assyria. And be not ye like your fathers, and like
your brethren, which trespassed against the LORD God of their
fathers, who therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield
yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he
hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the
fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you. For if ye turn
again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall
come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious
and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye
return unto him.
Psalm 80:3
“Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall
be saved.”
Psalm 80:7
“Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and
we shall be saved.”
Psalm 80:14
“Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from
heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;”
Psalm 85:4
“Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward
us to cease.”
Ezekiel 14:6
“Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord
GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn
away your faces from all your abominations.”
Ezekiel 18:32
“For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the
Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.”
Hosea 12:6
“Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and
wait on thy God continually. “
Close:
Sodom perished in spite of all their disadvantages. We today are
living and surviving only by the mercy of God.
The world has received all the warning signs that Sodom lacked.
We have been fortunate these many years. We have triumphed
through many crises, but all the kings’ horses and all the kings’ men
cannot avert the current and coming judgment. Only repentance by a
broken and contrite Christians and churches can do that.
